Appropriation
In art, appropriation is the act of using someone's past work and copying aspects of that work into your own work. Instead of the piece being exactly the same, the new artwork has something different included in it. This could be a different background, painting, or colors. Appropriation is different from plagiarism because you are not simply copying someone else's work without their permission, you are adding you own twist to it. Appropriation can be viewed as stealing someone else's work if it is extremely similar to the past piece. For example, if the first painting had a black and white scenery of bridge and the second painting had the same exact scenery and details, just in color, it can be viewed as stealing or plagiarism. Both plagiarism and appropriation do involve taking someone's idea and using it in their art.
